Slacklining balances mind and body

Though Mizzou Slackline Club often meets at Peace Park in Columbia, Mo., and strings their slacklines between trees when the weather is nice, they also meet in the warehouse space of Show-Me Gymnastics. The two spaces require different set-ups, but both require the same balance and focus. Drew Nikonowicz, Mizzou Slackline Club member, briefly explains the equipment involved with slacklining and discusses the guidance he received regarding the best technique to use when he was first learning to slackline in high school. Drew Nikonowicz, club member, said it's fun to slackline with other people, which he does at Thursday club practices at Show-Me Gymnastics in Columbia, Mo., but he generally slacklines alone, finding it almost meditative.

"I just throw some headphones in and just kind of vibe," Nikonowicz said. "If you really pare it down, I think it is [meditative] because, what do you do? You focus on your breathing and you walk on a line." Photos by Shannon Robb.
